Some in the music industry are promoting the concept of ISPs charging each customer $5 a month to compensate for sales lost to P2P downloading. Now this might sound like a good idea because it would add makeup revenue for the artists, writers and others in the industry, on top of the revenue that is generated by sales. But I wonder if consumer human nature might see it a different way. If I was forced to pay $60 a year each and every year I might consider that as my licence for access to all music. If others looked at it that way then the fee wouldn’t be additional revenue, it would be the only revenue for artists. It might be a real free for all (literally) as everyone scurried around ensuring that if they had to pay, they were going to get their money’s worth.
Would you pay $5 a month for music?
